Harmac Castlerea Key Sustainability Achievements and Award Shortlisting

Harmac Medical Products is advancing sustainable medtech manufacturing across its Castlerea, Ireland facility through a structured Climate Action Plan and dedicated environmental stewardship.

Supported by an independent Exemplar Energy audit, our decarbonization roadmap has driven significant reductions in energy consumption, carbon emissions, and operational waste. Key sustainability achievements include:

  • Energy & Facility Decarbonization: Facility upgrades include replacing 1,000 light fixtures with LEDs, installing high-efficiency boilers and window insulation, upgrading ventilation systems, and recovering compressor waste heat to warm warehousing areas.
  • Manufacturing Electrification & Controls: We are completing the transition of 21 injection moulding machines (50T to 440T) – including two-shot molding – from hydraulic to electric, servo-driven units. Targeted weekend cleanroom forecast annual savings of 16,000 liters of heating oil and 65,000 kWh of electricity.
  • Compressed Air Efficiency: Six-monthly surveys and repairs under our 2025 compressed air program identified annual energy savings of 256,090 kWh, preventing 57.9 tonnes of CO2e emissions.
  • On-Site Renewable Solar: Supported by an IDA Ireland Green Capital grant, an approved 500.76 kWp solar PV system will generate 387,837 kWh annually, eliminating an estimated 130 tonnes of CO2e per year.
  • Validated Emissions Targets: Following SGS independent limited assurance of our 2025 Scope 1 and 2 baseline (794.16 tonnes CO2e), our Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) commitment was approved in April 2026. We are finalizing targets to achieve a 33% reduction by 2031, alongside active CDP disclosures and supply chain Scope 3 surveys.
  • Environmental & Waste Management: Reassessed for ISO 14001 in 2026 and retaining EcoVadis Bronze, Castlerea achieved zero waste to landfill in 2025. Year-to-date 2026 performance shows an 86% recycling rate and 14% waste-to-energy conversion, surpassing our 85% target.
  • Biodiversity & Employee Engagement: Teams actively participate in No Mow May, pollinator-friendly planting aligned with the All-Ireland Pollinator Plan, community litter-picking, and reduced pesticide usage, complemented by outdoor picnic tables crafted from over 30,000 recycled plastic bottles.

This IDA-backed program also extends to cleanroom air handling unit (AHU) and chiller plant upgrades, alongside phased electric heat pump integration projected to cut Scope 1 emissions by approximately 41 tonnes of CO2e annually. Furthermore, this funding drives Building Management System (BMS) enhancements – adding advanced sensors, metering, and process-level energy monitoring to optimize utility controls, eliminate waste, and verify ongoing savings.
