Partnership with STEAM Education Ltd. Inspires Next-Generation Engineers

June 23, 2021

Harmac Steam Team

Our Ireland team enjoys working with area schools to tour our facilities and show students the medical devices we create, in hopes of inspiring the next generation of engineers. Recently, we’ve taken that mentorship to a new level by joining a program though which students can explore the STEAM disciplines: Science, Education, Technology, Art and Math. We’ve partnered with STEAM Education Ltd., which offers schools a 10-week program designed with expert input and delivered during the school day. This adds structure to our interactions as well as the materials needed to help kids learn all about engineering.

Business Unit Engineering Manager Gary Dolan and Senior Project/Process Engineer Carl McEnroe worked with roughly 25 students from Tamron NS, most of whom live within the vicinity of our facility – including some whose family members are Harmac employees. Gary and Carl helped the kids understand infrastructure by building a bridge with paper, then a birdhouse with popsicle sticks. They discussed renewable energy by helping them create a windmill. They created circuits using batteries, Playdoh and LED lights. They even got into the basics of bioengineering by creating an artificial hand! The kids showed great interest in the lessons, and the interaction was “top class.” We definitely have some budding engineers in our midst in the Castlerea region!

If you’d like our employees to visit your schools and inspire your students, please reach out to our team at any of our facilities.
